As per reports, Salary Negotiation Delays BCCI’s Announcement of Gautam Gambhir as Head Coach
Following the finale of the T20 World Cup 2024, Rahul Dravid’s term as head coach of the Indian cricket team ended, and the squad is still without a recognised head coach. For a five-match Twenty20 International Series, the backup Indian team is playing in Zimbabwe. VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is acting as a temporary head coach.
Two contenders for the position have previously been interviewed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI): Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman. The Gautam Gambhir is anticipated to accept the position.
India’s Head Coach Selection Process
Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman applied for the position of India’s head coach. Gautam Gambhir is likely to be appointed as India’s head coach.
However, as BCCI secretary Jay Shah previously said that the new coach will take over after the Sri Lanka series, there has been a slight delay in the announcement.
Gautam Gambhir New Head Coach For India?
The Indian Express reports that the continuing compensation negotiations between Gambhir and the board are the reason for the delay in the official announcement.
In the job advertisement, the BCCI states its flexibility regarding the head coach’s salary, saying that it is “negotiable and will be commensurate with experience.” According to the report, Gambhir is expecting a salary more than his predecessor, Rahul Dravid, who made approximately Rs12 crore a year.
Dravid’s crew, which included fielding coach T Dilip, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and batting coach Vikram Rathour, has also concluded their tenure as coaches. The board must begin the process of selecting additional coaches as soon as Gambhir’s appointment is formally announced.
Also, it has been stated that the board intends to offer Gambhir total freedom in choosing the selection of support staff. Given that Gautam Gambhir was a superb opening batsman in his playing career, a batting coach might not even be employed.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah had previously said. “Both coach and selector appointments will be made shortly, Once in Mumbai, we will follow the decision made by CAC, which conducted interviews and shortlisted two names. “While VVS Laxman is leaving for Zimbabwe as interim coach, a new one will take charge from the Sri Lankan tour.
Beginning on July 27, the Indian team will play a three-T20I and three-ODI against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.
India is currently touring Zimbabwe and playing in a 5-match T20I series. So far, India and Zimbabwe have each won one match. The young Indian team is being led by Shubman Gill in the absence of senior players.”
