In the fifth match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clashed with the Gujarat Giants (GG) at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium. In the highly anticipated encounter, skipper Smriti Mandhana of Royal Challengers Bangalore won the toss and elected to bowl. The decision to bowl first paid off well for RCB, and they secured victory in the match by 8 wickets.
The batting struggles persist for the Gujarat Giants as their top-order batters failed to make significant contributions. Among the top orders, only opener Harleen Deol managed to score a double-digit figure, posting 22 runs off 31 balls. The remaining batters were dismissed cheaply, with most scoring in single digits. In the latter part of the innings, Dayalan Hemalatha played a crucial role, scoring 31 runs off 25 balls, aiding the team in surpassing the 100-run mark. Ultimately, GG concluded their innings with a total score of 107/7 in 20 overs.
In the RCB bowling performance, Sophie Molineux claimed three wickets, Renuka Singh secured two wickets, and Georgia Wareham took one wicket, effectively limiting GG to a total of 107 runs in 20 overs.
WPL 2024: RCB Triumphs Over GG
In pursuit of a modest target of 108, RCB effortlessly surpassed it in the 13th over with the loss of 2 wickets. Smriti Mandhana played a scintillating innings, scoring 43 runs off 27 balls, significantly boosting the team’s net run rate, which is crucial in the context of the game. Sabbhineni Meghana and Ellyse Perry remained unbeaten with scores of 36 and 23, respectively. RCB reached a total of 110/2 in 12.3 overs, propelling them to the top of the points table.
Gujarat Giants lacked the bowling depth to secure more than 2 wickets. Ashleigh Gardner and Tanuja Kanwar managed to take 1 wicket each.
